Gravity – the force that holds us to the earth in every moment of every day. Do you ever think about that? I’ve been contemplating it for quite some time – intrigued by this potent mystery, so essential to life on this planet.
Not only does gravity pull us to earth, it also gives us a way to expand away from it in the opposite direction. A tree is a perfect example; as the root system is pulled toward the center of the earth, the trunk, branches and leaves extend up and up and up! So it is with the human body – as gravity pulls our legs and lower body down, our upper body can reach towards the sky, opening the space between each vertebra and rib – our whole bony structure opens up, creating the possibility for infinite, spacious expansion.
Take a moment to explore these dynamic points of contrast. While standing, reach into the soles of your feet feeling weighted from the pelvis down, rooted – at the same time feel drawn upward through the top of your head, so that your whole upper body, spine and ribcage feel expansive and alive.
Take a few breaths and enjoy reaching toward and reaching away – using the pull of the finite and (seemingly) fixed to reach into the infinite, expansive mystery of life as an earthbound human being.
To Your Body, Carol
